Laser Safety Lab-based Training Checklist

INTENDED AUDIENCE: The laser safety lab-based training is considered part of the laser user initial training requirements and must be completed prior to work with Class 3B or Class 4 lasers or working in a class 3B or 4 laboratory. The laser safety lab-based training is required for all laser users who operate Class 3B and 4 lasers and for non-users who work in a Class 3B or 4 laser lab but do not operate the lasers. Questions regarding training applicability should be directed to the Laser Safety Officer, Amy Courchesne (860-486-5399).

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The laser safety lab-based training includes a review of the laser safety policies and procedures specific to the Class 3B or Class 4 laser users and non-users who work in the laser lab. The training is required prior to working in a Class 3B or 4 laser lab and is conducted in the laser laboratory by the Primary Laser Researcher (laser supervisor). The signed completed form must be mailed to Environmental Health & Safety U-4097.

Radiation Safety (Refresher)

INTENDED AUDIENCE: The radiation safety refresher training is required for all LIs and radioactive materials users who have completed the initial radiation safety training. Trained users are required to attend one refresher training session prior to each protocol renewal. This training is not applicable to radioactive material laboratory non-users, x-ray equipment or laser users, or non-laboratory personnel. Questions regarding training applicability should be directed to the Radiation Safety Officer, Amy Courchesne (860-486-5399).

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Radiation Safety Refresher Training for radioactive material users includes a review of pertinent radiation safety policies and procedures, information, and program updates and changes and varies on an annual basis. The refresher training class will be conducted annually on-site with laboratory personnel and scheduled through the Radiation Safety Office. The Radiation Safety Office will inform the Licensed Investigator when refresher training is needed for laboratory personnel. Radiation Safety Ancillary Training

INTENDED AUDIENCE: This course is required initially and annually for all Non-Laboratory personnel who must enter and perform work in a radioactive materials laboratory but do not handle radioactive materials. Such individuals are classified as ancillary "non-users" and are required to attend this course prior to working in a radioactive materials laboratory, or entering a radioactive materials laboratory unescorted. This training is also for Non-Laboratory personnel who must enter and perform work in analytical x-ray equipment laboratories or Class 3B or 4 laser laboratories. Examples of ancillary personnel are custodial staff, Facilities, UCPD, UCFD and Animal Care workers. Questions regarding training applicability should be directed to the Radiation Safety Officer, Amy Courchesne (860-486-5399).

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course covers the University of Connecticut Radiation Safety Program including applicable radioactive materials, x-ray, and laser laboratory information. Topics include: radiation protection principles, signs and labels, security, and emergency procedures. NOTE: Course registration is not required -- EHS will contact to schedule, as required.

Radiation Safety for Users (Initial)

INTENDED AUDIENCE: This course is required for all individuals who plan to work directly with or handle radioactive materials in a laboratory. Such individuals are classified as "users" and are required to attend this course prior to working in a radioactive materials laboratory. This course does not apply to x-ray or laser laboratories or non-laboratory workers. Questions regarding training applicability should be directed to the Radiation Safety Officer, Amy Courchesne (860-486-5399).

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Radiation Safety for Users initial training covers the University of Connecticut Radiation Safety Program. Topics include: radiation protection principles, signs and labels, security and control, emergency procedures, radionuclide materials receipt and inventory, storage, use, monitoring, waste, and documentation procedures required for radioactive materials users.

Radioactive Material Orders in HuskyBuy

INTENDED AUDIENCE: This course is pre-requisite training for ordering radioactive materials or sources. This course is required for all LIs and authorized radioactive material users designated by the LI or the RSO to order radioactive material. Questions regarding training applicability should be directed to the Radiation Safety Officer, Amy Courchesne (860-486-5399).

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Radiation Safety initial training is a pre-requisite for this course. This course covers the proper procedures for procurement of radioactive material in the University’s HuskyBuy purchasing system. Topics include specific radioactive material ordering procedures in HuskyBuy and the basis for the requirements. This course is conducted in-person by the RSO or designee on an as needed basis. For more information about this course or to schedule a session, the LI should contact Amy Courchesne (860-486-5399).

X-Ray Safety Lab-based Training Checklist

INTENDED AUDIENCE: The x-ray safety lab-based training is required for all analytical x-ray equipment users and non-users prior to working in an analytical x-ray diffraction or spectrographic equipment laboratory or prior to operating such equipment. Questions regarding training applicability should be directed to the Radiation Safety Officer, Amy Courchesne (860-486-5399).

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The x-ray safety lab-based training includes a review of the x-ray safety policies and procedures specific to the analytical x-ray equipment users and non-users. The training is conducted in the x-ray laboratory by the x-ray equipment supervisor. The signed completed forms must be mailed to Environmental Health & Safety U-4097.
